Walmart removed from the sale T-shirts with symbols of the USSR after complaints from the Baltic countries

WalMart will no longer sell T-shirts with symbols of the Soviet Union, to which politicians from the former Soviet republics in the Baltic region complained.

About this September 18 MEP from Latvia Ines Vaidere wrote on your social network page Facebook, Said Rtvi.

She cited a letter from Walmart, in which the company apologized for selling such clothes. Walmart also noted that T-shirts with the symbols of the USSR were never sold in retail stores and were only available on the website. Now the company has promised to remove them from there.

At the time of this writing on the Walmart store site is still can be ordered other t-shirts with symbols of the USSR.

September 3 MEPs from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia wrote a letter to walmart with a request to remove from the range of T-shirts with the words "USSR". Text of the letter опубликовала Latvian politician Krisjanis Karins. In her publication, she noted that the sale of such a product is disrespect for “the memory of the victims who suffered at the hands of the Soviet totalitarian regime.”

Politicians advised Walmart to follow the example of Adidas, which in May 2018 stripped off from the sale of a shirt with the emblem of the USSR after the appeal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania. Clothes were released to the World Cup, which was held in Russia. Adidas did not officially comment on the complaint, but the T-shirts disappeared from the range.

In the Baltic countries, by law prohibited demonstration of Nazi and communist symbols. For example, in Lithuania, the depiction of leaders of the USSR and Nazi Germany is forbidden, in Latvia it is prohibited to demonstrate symbols of totalitarian regimes in public places, and in Estonia use of Soviet and Nazi symbols in public places.
