Chinese coronavirus: three people escaped from quarantine in Russia

A pregnant woman with a child jumped out of the hospital window to avoid quarantine, and another Russian woman managed to escape from the quarantine in the hospital by disabling the electronic lock, writes Daily Telegraph. According to both women, they escaped due to the attitude of the doctors, poor conditions and fear that they could become infected in isolation.

The incidents come amid an outbreak of the virus in China, which has already infected more than 40 people worldwide. Only two cases of 000-nCoV infection have been reported in Russia. However, authorities have taken extensive measures to prevent the spread of the new disease and hospitalized hundreds of people who returned from China as a precaution.

Many of those who were quarantined in various Russian hospitals complained about the difficult conditions of detention and the lack of cooperation on the part of doctors unsure of the quarantine protocols.

Both women said their hospital trials began after returning from Hainan, the tropical region of China, popular with Russian tourists.

In an extensive Instagram report, Guzel Neder said her son developed a cough and a fever of 37,3 C (99,2 F) four days after the family returned from Hainan to Samara. She called an ambulance, whose staff diagnosed the boy with a viral respiratory infection and said that mother and son should go to the hospital to be examined for coronavirus.

For three days, according to the woman, the hospital promised the results of the tests, and then extended the term to five, while the boy responded well to treatment with drugs and an inhaler.

According to her, when she tried to achieve results, the hospital staff interfered with her.

Meanwhile, the woman began to worry about the quality of the procedures in the hospital, saying that some medical workers came to the isolation zone without masks, in holey gloves or threw their protective clothing on the floor.

Her anxiety significantly increased on the fifth day, when she felt bad. The woman asked her husband to bring her a home pregnancy test, and he turned out to be positive. Guzel’s husband demanded that his wife and son be allowed to go home because of her condition and fear of infection. The doctor said they need to be quarantined for 14 days, even if the virus test returned negative.

“My son was hysterical,” Guzel wrote. “We had no choice but to leave the hospital without permission - through the window.”

Police later interrogated her at home, but did not bring any charges.

“Everyone in my family is alive and well, thank God,” she wrote.

Another woman, Alla Ilyina, said in her Instagram post that she had a sore throat, a few days after returning to St. Petersburg from Hainan.

Ilyina called the ambulance service, and doctors took her to the hospital for testing for coronavirus, promising to let her go after 24 hours. The next day she was told that she had a negative result for the virus, but she should remain in quarantine for two weeks.

“This is wild,” writes Ilyina. “All three tests showed that I’m completely healthy, so what the hell is the quarantine?”

Her isolation room was terrible, the woman told the Fontanka newspaper - “no books, no shampoo, no Wi-Fi, no trash can, and the door was locked with an electronic lock.”

As a result, Ilyina found out how to break into an electronic lock, and fled from the hospital. Neither the staff of the institution, nor the police began to monitor her escape, which leads her to believe that her health is in order.

“If I were sick, they would bombard me with phone calls,” Fontanka quotes her.

Russian media reported that the hospital reported Ilyina’s escape to the police and a criminal investigation could be launched into this fact. Now messages from her Instagram are deleted.

Both women did not give official comments to the foreign press, but since then, Guzel published on the Internet a message stating that her comments were taken out of context and that she would never endanger her children and residents of the city.

Quarantine protocols due to the outbreak vary across Russia. In some regions, health officials are isolating Chinese citizens who have recently returned from China, while in others, anyone reporting symptoms consistent with the new virus is being quarantined for 14 days.

Newspaper "Fontanka" published a video, which was reportedly recorded by other patients in the same hospital from which Ilyina fled.

In the frame, two young women, who appear to be patients, sing: “I want to be like Alla, like Alla, I escaped from Botkin” and hold a handwritten leaflet with the inscription: “Let us out of here, please.”
