Causes terrible pain and suffocation: why battery-powered toys are dangerous for children

The holiday season is full of not only joy, but also dangers. Each year, children receive a lot of gifts, many of which have small, inconspicuous tablet batteries or button batteries. Writes about this with the BBC.

Little children, without hesitation, play and swallow small shiny, coin-like batteries. Acid from them burns through the esophagus and lungs, causes terrible pain and suffocation, puts the child’s life at risk.

Such batteries are used in many gadgets and toys that are presented for the New Year holidays. They can be found in gaming headsets, fitness bracelets, some mini insect robots and fish, key chains and yoyo toys.

Festive lights, television remotes, singing Santa Clauses, electric candles and musical Christmas cards can also work with these batteries.

How to prevent this?

Experts warn that saliva in the body interacts with substances from the battery, creating corrosive chemicals, so time in such cases is extremely important.

Discharged batteries can also be dangerous in that they contain a sufficient amount of electric charge to severely injure the child.

Ashley Martin of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warns parents: “Make sure that toys and other products that use batteries, such as small electronic devices, have special compartments that are locked from access. Beware of items such as musical greeting cards, electric candles, and remote controls, as battery compartments often cannot be locked there. Make sure spare batteries are kept out of the reach of children and used batteries are disposed of properly.”

NHS England medical director Professor Stephen Powis said: “Button batteries can look like sweets to little ones.”

“We want parents to be aware of the dangers of these potentially lethal batteries. The best way to protect children is to simply keep batteries out of the reach of children and ensure that any toys containing batteries have their battery compartments securely locked,” he notes.

If you suspect a child has swallowed the battery, consult a doctor immediately.
