More: Nikolai Mikhailovich Bondarenko was born in 1949 in the village of Dmitrovka, Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine. In 1972 he graduated from the Kharkov Art School, taught drawing and worked as an interior designer. From early childhood, Bondarenko loved to listen to memories of village life and wanted to tell the story of the Holodomor (artificial famine of 1932-1933) in his own way. The survivors told him about the incredible "menu" that provided their meager food, and he decided to portray not the emaciated peasants, but the food they were forced to eat in order to survive.
Bondarenko created a cycle of 80 linocuts called "Ukraine-1933: Cookbook", based on the visual theme of the window. The window frame symbolizes the heavy cross carried by people to the Holodomor, and the windows symbolize the hope of survival. Each page shows weeds and other plants consumed by the hungry, and in the lower right corner of the window is a "recipe" for this ersatz meal. Each of the pages includes an English translation of this “recipe”.
