Jewish couple accuses American Airlines of discrimination: what happened

Yehuda Yosef Adler, Jenny Adler, and their then 19-month-old daughter were disembarked on January 23, 2019 on a flight from Miami (Florida) to Detroit (Michigan) by a representative of American Airlines. He argued that people of their race and religion, orthodox Jews, take a bath only once a week. As a result, the couple sued. Writes about this USA Today.

The airline issued a statement in which it reiterated its claim that several passengers and crew members complained of unpleasant body odor from these passengers.

“Our team members took care of the family and provided hotel accommodations, meals, and booked them on a flight to Detroit the next morning,” the statement said. “None of the decisions our team made in handling this difficult situation were based on the Adler religion.”

According to the lawsuit, humiliation by the airline began as soon as Yehuda Adler boarded the plane.

Adler asked the stewardess for headphones when he got on the plane, explaining that the last time he flew the headphones were provided for free.

A nearby pilot answered in a rude manner that the airline does not provide such services.

A few minutes later, after they boarded, the airport officer informed Adler that an emergency had occurred and asked them to land. After that they were told that it was due to body odor and as directed by the pilot. The employee did not specify which of the family members emitted an unpleasant odor.

The airline said in a statement that passengers and crew complained about Adler.

The next morning, the plaintiffs were confused. Overcoming their embarrassment, they went to the people in the same place at the boarding gate and asked them if the unpleasant smell emanated from the body of any member of the Adler family. More than 20 people answered negatively.

Despite promises to unload their luggage, Adlers say the plane took off with a baby car seat, stroller, diapers and other things.

The couple was dressed in Jewish clothes, which, in their opinion, made the airline employees resort to discrimination.

Spouses say they were discredited by the ongoing statements of American Airlines: they say, they were dropped out of the plane due to an unpleasant odor.

Adlers suffered emotional stress, this situation damaged their personal and professional reputation, they lost their appetite, they are overcome by insomnia and fear associated with airports and flights.

According to the airline, the decision to drop the family off the plane was made because of concern for the comfort of other passengers.

A hearing on this issue is scheduled for May 29, 2020. Adler’s family is from Southfield, Michigan.
