IRS Payments for Children: What to Do If You Haven't Received Payment

This year alone, the tax credit per child has increased from $ 2000 to $ 3000 per child. Parents of children under the age of 6 will be eligible for an even larger total loan of $ 3600. The plan also includes a $ 3000 loan for parents of eligible children under 17. Previously, payments were only for children under 16 years old.

Up to half of that loan will be distributed over six months of this year, which means that a parent of one child over 6 can expect to be paid $ 250 later this month as the first of six installments of the $ 1500 upfront payment. There is also a phasing out of the payment of increased benefits based on income.

But the payment might not arrive until the evening of July 15, even for parents with IRS-linked bank accounts awaiting direct deposit. The IRS is a collection agency, not a payment mechanism, and they had a tight deadline to start these monthly payments. During the shutdown, the department faced a number of logistical delays with quarantine payments as it tried to void millions of checks, and may face similar hurdles this time.

If it turns out that your payment should have gone to your account, but the bank reports that it still hasn't received the funds, then you can submit a tracking request (this is an IRS request about what happened to your funds). To do this, you need to send by mail or fax Form 3911 to the department.

The IRS previously reported that it takes about six weeks to track results. The agency says it will not be able to initiate tracking if the direct recipients of the deposit do not wait at least five days from the date of the deposit. Check recipients are asked to wait four weeks from the due date before applying.
