Fourth Biggest US Jackpot: Maine Winner Wins $1,35 Billion

After three months and 25 straight draws without a winner, a lucky Maine player will take home a $1,35 billion jackpot - the fourth-largest lottery prize in US history and the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot. Writes about it KHOU.

The winning numbers for Friday, January 13th were: 30-43-45-46-61 and golden Mega Ball 14.

Until Friday, no one had guessed all six numbers and had not won the top prize since October 14th. These 25 drawings in a row without a winner allowed the top prize to increase within three months, which is not surprising, since the odds of winning were 1 in 302,6 million.

“Congratulations to the Maine Lottery, which just won its first Mega Millions jackpot,” said Pat McDonald, Ohio State Lottery Director and Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium.

It was a big evening for smaller winners too. Fourteen players from California, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas matched five numbers and won $1 million each.

It is commonly believed that Friday the 13th is an unlucky combination, but Mega Millions denies such superstitions: Since the game began in 2002, the jackpot has been hit 7 times on this day.

The $1,35 billion prize is for the winner who chooses an annuity with annual payments over 29 years. Winners almost always choose the cash option, which is valued at $724,6 million for the Friday night draw.

The jackpot resets to $20 million for the next draw on Tuesday, December 17th.

Friday's prize is the second largest in Mega Millions history, second only to the $1,537 billion jackpot won in October 2018.
