Measles outbreak in the US is increasing: in the epicenter - New York

The number of cases of measles in the United States reaches 880, with the majority of new cases occurring in New York.

On May 20, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 41 more cases of measles last week, bringing the total number of cases in 2019 to 880. This is the worst year for measles statistics in the last 25 years, writes CNBC.

The CDC said measles was confirmed this year in 24 states. And while the total number continues to grow, the pace seems to be slowing. However, the agency has not yet given an official statement about this, since it takes time to verify the data.

30 of 41 new cases were reported in the state of New York, where two major outbreaks occurred. 21 is a new case in New York City, and 9 new cases have been reported in the neighboring Rockland district.

In 2000, the US authorities officially announced that measles was eliminated in the country. The current surge in health care officials is attributed to an increase in the number of parents refusing to vaccinate their children.

Measles is highly contagious, but it can be prevented with the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. In recent years, more and more parents refuse to vaccinate children, sometimes based on the false information that vaccines cause autism.
