For the first time in 500 years: a major fracture of the earth's crust has intensified in Southern California

According to a new study, a large fault in Southern California, capable of causing an earthquake of magnitude 8 points, began its movement for the first time in 500 years.

The study showed that the Garlock fault, extending from east to west for 185 miles (297,7 km) from the San Andreas fault to Death Valley, narrowed by 0,8 inches (July 2,032 cm) in July. This is the first documented movement in modern history.

Satellite images show that the movement of the fault began after the most powerful earthquake in the past two decades in Southern California. At first, a force 6,4 point shock shook the Mojave Desert about 120 miles (193 km) north of Los Angeles. And the very next day there was a push in 7,1 points in addition to more than 100 000 tremors.

The earthquakes that struck the desert city of Ridgecrest caused disruptions in the network of interconnected faults throughout the region. This led to an additional load on the Garlock fault.

Ross developed an automated computer analysis of the seismometer data to detect a tremendous amount of tremors with accurate location information.

Interestingly, the 6,4 earthquake at the same time broke the faults at a right angle to each other, which is considered surprising.

The results of the study were published the same day when Governor Gavin Newsome announced the launch of the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system. She will use ground sensors from all over the state to detect earthquakes before people sense them.

The ShakeAlert system has been developed for many years by the US Geological Survey and research institutions, which will now send alerts to mobile phones using an application developed by the University of California at Berkeley and the Wire Emergency Alert system.

ShakeAlert uses hundreds of seismic sensor stations to detect the start of an earthquake, calculate its location and strength, and generate alerts that the WEA app and system will send to phones in danger areas.

The main task is to give seconds or tens of seconds to people to protect themselves before they start shaking.
