For the first time in the USA: in one of the states all types of drugs have been decriminalized

State law officially comes into force, de-criminalizing the use of heroin and other street drugs in small quantities, writes CNN.

Oregon became the first state in the country to officially decriminalize the possession and personal use of all drugs.

State voters approved Measure 110 in November, but it officially took effect on Monday, February 1. The initiative is also expanding access to drug addiction and other health services by offering help to those in need, rather than arresting and jailing people for drugs.

Measure 110 was adopted by 55,8% of the vote.

Possession of drugs such as heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine will no longer be punished with imprisonment, but instead will be punished with a fine for a traffic violation.

“Today the first domino fell in our brutal and inhumane war on drugs, setting off what we expect will be a cascade of other efforts that put health before criminalization,” Cassandra Frederike, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said Feb. 1.

“This law is designed to protect people from being targeted, harassed and criminalized by the state for drug use and instead give them access to the support they need,” she added.

Although possession of small quantities of drugs is decriminalized, larger quantities can lead to criminal penalties.

The move to decriminalize drugs in Oregon came after voters in several other states approved voting measures to legalize recreational marijuana.
