Pyranometers are devices installed in buildings on the University of Washington campus that help scientists estimate how dark a day actually is. With their help, scientists track how much solar radiation reaches the earth over a 24-hour period.

On Friday, the device measured 0,37 megajoules of solar radiation on the surface of one square meter. In July, the measurement results were almost 73 times higher than this value.

Recently, the city has been experiencing record heavy rains and there is a dense cloud cover.
"All the factors came together to give us this record," said UW meteorologist Cliff Mass.
