With the help of a naval drone, the researchers looked into the middle of Hurricane Sam, which is raging in the Atlantic.

Thanks to the Saildrone Explorer SD 1045 marine drone, scientists have seen for the first time what is happening inside the hurricane.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said in a press release that the Saildrone Explorer SD 1045 traveled to the center of Hurricane Sam, where it withstood 15-meter waves and winds that reached 193 km per hour. There, the marine drone collected important scientific data and provided a completely new perspective on one of the most destructive forces on Earth.

Sea drones are a development of Saildrone, Inc. and NOAA wants to learn more about what is happening in the middle of the hurricane with their help. Marine drones now monitor the ocean surface and provide valuable information for forecasters that can be used to create computer weather forecasting models.

The drone recorded waves 15 meters high and a wind speed of about 190 km / h and collected data that will help in the study of hurricanes and cyclones and their forecasting. “Using data collected from marine drones, we hope to improve forecast models that predict the rapid intensification of hurricanes,” NOAA said.

Saildrone is a drone company that collects ocean data. They come in three sizes and can be equipped with devices to measure weather and ocean conditions, map the seabed, and even track fish and other organisms in the water.

NOAA scientist Greg Foltz says seaborne drones can better understand the behavior of hurricanes and how they intensify.
