US Special Representative: in Ukraine, a great nationalist minority gained a lot of influence

In Ukrainian society, politicians who demonstrate nationalist views are gaining popularity due to the conflict in Donbas, and many of them have to replicate this trend, despite the fact that it does not coincide with their real views, as they are concerned about their results in the upcoming elections.

This opinion in an interview DW expressed the special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine Kurt Volker.

“Ukraine has become a country where an extreme nationalist minority has gained great influence. Most Ukrainian politicians are not far-right nationalists, but they must be careful not to be suspected of not fighting for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state. Therefore, they must take seriously how they appear in the eyes of society. They should advocate for the reintegration of Ukrainian regions,” Volker said.

He added that the popularity of nationalism and the idea of ​​reintegration in Ukraine indicate that politicians do not use the conflict in the Donbas to retain power, they really want to end it.

“I don’t think they are interested in continuing the conflict, but really want it to end,” he said.

Concern about the election results, Volker also explained the reluctance of the Ukrainian authorities to carry out reforms.

“I think Ukrainian politicians are very concerned about their political prospects ahead of elections next year and are trying to survive in an environment where there have been no significant reforms for many years. They are not sure of positive results if they took certain steps now. If Ukraine is ever truly going to be a successful country with opportunities for growth, prosperity and security - which is what all Ukrainians want - it will eventually have to take some big steps,” Volker said.
