During a shooting in Illinois, a Russian-speaking immigrant and her husband died: their 2-year-old son miraculously survived

Both parents of 2-year-old Aiden were among the seven people killed in the mass shooting. Kevin McCarthy was 37 years old, his wife was 35.

Irina was born in Moscow (Russia) to a Russian-Jewish family. She immigrated to Illinois at the age of 2 with her parents, Michael and Nina Levberg, who, like many other Soviet-era emigrants, were looking for a better life in the US. Forward.

According to Irina's father and Aiden's grandfather Michael Levberg, Kevin covered the child with himself from the shooting, writes The Guardian.

The couple, Dana and Greg Ring, said they took Aiden in during the shootout. According to them, they found him with a stranger who was also in shock.

“He was shaking all over,” said Dana Ring.

The child was not hurt.

“We got a little boy,” Greg Ring confirmed. “I picked him up.”

Greg Ring said he was trying to find Aiden's parents.

The couple took the child to the fire station. A Highland Park police detective soon located the boy's grandparents.

According to page GoFundMecreated for the baby, grandparents will take care of him. As of Thursday morning, June 7, people have donated more than $2,8 million.

“Aiden will be taken care of by his loving family. He has a long way to go to heal, find stability, and ultimately live,” reads the fundraising page.

Dozens of people were injured in that mass shooting. Robert Crimo III, 21, was taken into custody hours after the shooting. Investigators believe he fired over 70 shots from the roof of a building overlooking the parade route.

Crimo was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder.
