South Korea's Halloween stampede leaves at least 146 dead

At least 146 people have been killed and 150 more injured in a stampede during a Halloween celebration in Seoul, South Korea's capital. Read more about the tragedy told the publication Independent.

Some of those injured are in serious condition and the death toll could rise, emergency services warn. Many of those caught in the stampede went into cardiac arrest, officials said.

Recordings from the scene show dozens of bodies along the street, and footage posted on social media shows rescuers performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to save the lives of the injured.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the incident appalling. "Our thoughts are with all South Koreans at this very difficult time," he tweeted.

The stampede occurred as a densely packed crowd moved forward in an alley outside the Hamilton Hotel, the main party venue in the Itaewon area.

An estimated 100 people took to the streets of Itaewon for the Halloween celebration. It was the biggest celebration in recent years since the easing of restrictions imposed in connection with COVID-000.

Witnesses described chaos minutes before the stampede as police began to lose control of the crowd.

Footage from social media shows hundreds of people huddled in a narrow alley standing still as emergency personnel and police tried to drag them to freedom.

More than 400 rescuers from all over the country have been sent to treat the wounded, including almost all the available personnel in Seoul.

Ambulances lined up on the streets, the police left, and the rescuers put the wounded on stretchers. Many people were taken to the hospital. Many of them were wearing masks and Halloween costumes.

Some local media reported that the stampede occurred after people gathered at the festivities, hearing that a celebrity had visited the bar, rushed there.

A survivor named Kim said they were trapped for about an hour and a half before they were rescued.

According to an eyewitness from the Reuters agency, a makeshift mortuary was set up in a building near the scene of the incident.

Authorities said they were investigating the exact cause of the crash.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol urged officials to ensure that the wounded are treated quickly and to conduct security checks at festival venues.

In addition, he instructed the Department of Health to quickly dispatch emergency medical teams.
