The fire broke out on June 9 at 2 in the morning hours on the 14 floor of the 16-storey residential building at 725 Garden Street.
Authorities have reported that the fire probably began in a garbage bin and spread through the corridors of the building, blocking residents on several floors.
A man named James, who lives on the 15 floor, said that he and his brother were just about to sleep when they heard calls for help and saw smoke in the corridor.
“I heard the fire alarm and saw smoke coming from the stairs, so we just closed the doors, opened the windows and covered our faces with wet bandages. We waited like that for about an hour or an hour and a half,” he said.
One of the residents of the building said that he had heard the fireworks and suggested that it was he who could have caused the fire.
“Last night around 23pm people were returning from the festival. They were setting off fireworks. Later, I heard an explosion from my apartment,” the man said.
“It’s complete chaos there. As far as I understand, the 14th floor is completely destroyed,” he added.
The New York City Fire Department has not yet given an official response on how the fire started.

“There were three floors on fire,” said a 50-year-old resident of the house.
“Even the roof was on fire. Someone in the corridor shouted: “Fire!” I looked out the window and all I saw was glass falling. I opened the door, and there was a lot of smoke. My daughter and I had to flee. We saw a naked man who was bleeding. He was not dressed and was bleeding. Some people helped him,” she recalls.
By 3 a.m. the fire was brought under control. At least 100 residents took to the streets with their pets. Many ran out into the street wearing only T-shirts and underwear - what they wore while sleeping.
“I saw one woman who looked like her skin was peeling off. She screamed. Her back, legs and arms were burned,” said Chenelle Williams, whose sister lives in the building. She rushed there when she heard about the fire.
“Many people were without clothes. My friend also ran out of the building without clothes. There were children. People just ran out and didn't think about getting dressed. That means they were very scared,” Williams recalls.
