Amount of Americans Wishing to Have Guns Increased During Pandemic
According to a report from the Brookings Institution, during the pandemic in liberal states, the number of permits to use weapons increased. Writes about it Fox Business.
The institute analyzed Gallup data and found a decrease in the relationship between people with conservative views and applications for weapons permits from February to April 2020, but saw a positive correlation between permits and liberal states in the same period.
“While gun ownership is often cited as one of the pressing issues dividing the United States, COVID-19 appears to be changing the direction of the debate. While states with populations that predominantly identify as conservative are more likely to own guns, that doesn't mean gun purchases have increased the most during the pandemic in those states, the report said. “Gun permits have increased the most during the COVID-19 pandemic in states that are much more liberal, both in terms of civic ideology and the governor’s political party affiliation.”
The report further describes how four of the 10 states with the largest increase in the number of weapons permits were Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont, which are considered liberal.
Rhode Island topped the list in terms of permit growth, with a nearly 2020% increase in gun permits from February to April 400. And, according to the report, Maine, which has a liberal population of about 35%, saw a more than 300% increase in permit applications.
