In France, a student stabbed a teacher: he claims that he was forced to do it by voices in his head

In a school in the French city of Saint-Jean-de-Luz on February 22, a high school student stabbed a Spanish teacher to death, reports with the BBC.

French government spokesman Olivier Veran confirmed the attack and said the attacker was 16 years old.

The police arrived at St. Thomas Aquinas along with the local prosecutor, where the student was arrested. The French newspaper Sud Ouest reported that the attacker, a student at the school, entered the classroom while the Spanish teacher was teaching and attacked her.

Local media reports that the teacher was in her fifties and died of cardiac arrest after an ambulance arrived at the school.

The French television channel BFM notes that the attacker locked the classroom door and stabbed the teacher in the chest.

French Education Minister Pape Ndiaye said on Twitter that his prayers are with the teacher's "family, colleagues and students."

Local media reports that the student had mental health problems. According to them, at this stage of the investigation, there is no suggestion that the incident was related to terrorism. The boy told the police that he was “obsessed” and heard voices that ordered him to attack the teacher, reports Independent.

At a press conference, Veran said the government would support educators across the country after the incident.

“It’s hard for me to imagine the trauma this causes,” he said.

The events took place at St. Thomas d'Aquin Catholic School in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, about 20 kilometers south of Biarritz, close to the Spanish border, the prefecture said in a press release. By lunchtime, students who had been ordered to stay in their classrooms were able to leave the school, many of them being taken away by their parents.

This is the first time a teacher has been killed in the line of duty in France since the murder of Samuel Paty in the autumn of 2020 in Val-d'Oise.
