The first case of Zika virus infection in 2017 was recorded in Florida

Florida public health officials reported the first Zika virus in the state in 2017 from a local mosquito.

The Florida Department of Health reported that a couple from Manate County went to Cuba, and one of them contracted Zika on this island, writes NBC.

After returning home, the infected traveler was bitten by a local mosquito, which then bit the second stalls in a pair and infected it with a virus. Officials refused to disclose the gender of the couple, citing privacy law.

Officials noted that there is no evidence of continued active transmission of the virus along the coast of Florida or in other parts of the state.

Last year, Florida had recorded 296 cases of Zika virus infection from local mosquitoes.

Zika causes relatively mild symptoms in most adults, but can lead to serious birth defects in babies born to women infected with the virus during pregnancy.
