Heat wave in Florida: temperature records of the last 40 years broken

Orlando International Airport hit 37,2C on the afternoon of August 8, beating the old daily record of 36,6C that was set back in 1987. This is the actual temperature, not the heat index or "felt" temperature.

This was not the only broken record.

Vero Beach Regional Airport reached 36,1C, breaking the 2011 record.

Daytona Beach International Airport reached 36,6C. This temperature broke its previous record, set in 1989. Melbourne International Airport also set a new record of 36,6C - the previous one was recorded in 2011.

The temperature reached 8C at Orlando Sanford International Airport on August 36,6, breaking the record set in 1999.

Several counties in Central Florida—Lake, Volusia, Seminole, Orange, Brevard, Osceola, and Indian River—were under heat warnings on August 8. It was extended until August 9 due to high temperatures and humidity. This combination increases the risk of heat stroke, especially if people work or walk outside.

Heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke: signs and symptoms

Heat cramps cause painful muscle spasms. The treatment for this condition is rest, restoration of water balance, exercises aimed at stretching the muscles and tendons.

Heat exhaustion - a condition of moderate severity, which is manifested by an increase in body temperature (within 37-40 ° C). Symptoms include thirst, headache, weakness, momentary loss of consciousness, vomiting and dizziness. Often accompanied by dehydration and profuse sweating, as well as tachycardia and a sharp decrease in blood pressure.

An important feature of this condition, which distinguishes it from heat stroke, is the absence of disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) and dysfunction of internal organs. If symptoms from the side of the central nervous system do occur (headache, moderate disorientation), then they quickly disappear at rest and when the body is cooled. Treatment includes physical rest, removal of excess outer clothing and sports equipment, moving the victim to a room with a low air temperature, and oral or intravenous rehydration.

Cooling methods may include cool showers or cold compresses. If untimely detected, heat exhaustion can turn into heat stroke. With the timely provision of the necessary assistance, the symptoms are quickly eliminated in most people and they do not need hospitalization.

This is a life-threatening condition characterized by an increase in body temperature above 40 ° C, which is accompanied by dysfunction of the central nervous system and occurs due to excessive exposure to an environment with high air temperatures. CNS disturbances may manifest as agitation, confusion, delirium, or coma. It is very important to distinguish heat stroke from heat exhaustion in time, since these conditions can be similar in appearance.
