In Florida, the judge was asked to postpone the meeting due to a solar eclipse
The Department of Justice asked for a Florida trial to be postponed this week so that the lawyer could see solar eclipse, writes The Washington Post.
In a three-page ruling, Judge Stephen Merridey of the Florida District Court denied the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms' request to postpone the hearing because their agent had prepaid a trip to view the eclipse on Monday, Aug.21.
The judge ruled that the trial involving the offender accused of possessing illegal firearms would continue, regardless of the eclipse of the sun.
The first page of the decree, released on Friday, 18 August, draws on Greek history and the lines from Simona’s famous song “You are so vain,” including: “Okay, I heard that you went to Saratoga / And your horse naturally won / Then you sent your Lardjet to Nova Scotia / To see the total eclipse of the sun ... ”.
Paraphrasing famous lines from Star Trek, the judge then wrote: “On this occasion, the United States Assistant Attorney is boldly going to postpone the trial because an agent. .. paid the cost of visiting the zone to view the solar eclipse, which will occur on August 21 ".
“This proposal proposes to subordinate the time and resources of the court, opposing counsel, witnesses and jurors to one person's desire to view a 'total solar eclipse lasting no more than two minutes and forty-two seconds,'" Merriday concluded. — When an irreplaceable participant in the process, knowing that without him the trial will not take place, pays in advance for some kind of personal interest, this participant, in essence, makes a bet. This time, unlike Carly Simone's ex-fiancé, whose "horse naturally won," this player's horse naturally lost."
