Florida scared by the appearance of a serial killer
October 11 in Tampa, Florida, 32-year-old sign language teacher Monica Hoffa was killed.
She was shot with a pistol, the woman’s body was found only on October 13, reports NBC News.
Hoffa is one of three victims in a series of murders that police believe are connected. The first victim was 22-year-old Benjamin Mitchell, a local college student who was shot while waiting for a bus on October 9; a second victim, 20-year-old Anthony Naiboa, was killed on October 12 near the same bus stop, his body being found 300 yards (270 m) from where Mitchell's body was discovered.
The police have not yet established the identity of the suspect and have not determined the motive for the killings. But the fact that the crimes were committed within a few days within the 1 radius suggests that these killings are interrelated. This caused anxiety of local residents because of the possible appearance of a serial killer in the city.
"There are no connections or motives for these murders, so we're all feeling a little shocked and concerned that we could be the next victim," said resident Stan Lasater.
He added that petty crimes often happened in the city, but the message about the first murder shocked the residents of the city, and the information about the next two frightened and alerted them.
However, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan encouraged residents to carry on as normal - have barbecues, walk their dogs, don't be afraid to go out in the yard, etc.
“We will not become hostages to the situation,” he said.
Dugan noted that it is too early to talk about work in the city of a serial killer, because too little is known about crimes.
“I've deliberately avoided that definition because I don't want people to focus on one person. These murders could have been committed by several people or a group of people,” Dugan explained.
Meanwhile, residents of the city decided to be vigilant and engaged in centralized lighting of houses and streets in Tampa.
People also lay flowers and candles in three places where the bodies of the dead were found.
