In Florida, flyers with a call to 'get out of here' are hung on cars with New York numbers

Palm Beach police say that on January 1-2, someone posted leaflets on parked cars with New York license plates. The leaflets read: “If you are one of the 'awakened' then leave Florida. You will be happier elsewhere, just like us, ”says Tampa Bay Times.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines "awakening" in a political context as "aware and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)." The term was first used by black Americans in the 1930s, but became popularized by the Black Lives Matters after Michael Brown was shot dead by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer in 2014.

Some conservatives, however, use the word as an insult to liberals, saying that it means that the person is overly sensitive and moralizes a lot and sees racism where it does not exist.

Trump became one of 8800 Palm Beach residents in 2019, moving from his native New York. He said in an interview last year that "waking up means you're a failure."

This time of year, Palm Beach sees a large influx of tourists visiting its resorts, restaurants and beaches.

The Palm Beach Post reported that the notices were for some residents, who said it appeared to be disrespectful to those who had a different opinion, and the flyers could be viewed as a threat.

Police Captain Will Rothrock said the department is investigating any law violations. He said it is not known how many vehicles were attacked because not all cases were reported.

“We understand this is a lack of courtesy and respect for personal property. This is worrying,” he said.
