In Florida, a fraudster, posing as Elon Musk, defrauded a school principal of $ 100

A high school principal in Florida has resigned after school board members discovered she wrote a check for $100 in school funds to someone posing as Elon Musk online. Vice.

Dr. Ian McGee has worked at the Burns School of Science and Technology, a STEM school in Oak Hill, Florida. According to local news reports, McGee wanted to raise money for the school and for a while tried to get Musk to take notice of the school.

When someone posing as Musk made contact with McGee, she seemed to believe it. The fake Musk convinced McGee to write him a check for $100 and claimed that this would lead to Musk investing $000 million into the school. “Somehow she believed it,” said Albert Amalfitano, the school’s board chairman. “He must have been very convincing.”

“I am a very smart woman. Well educated. I fell for a scam,” McGee said during a board-teacher meeting. She then said that Musk's double had been working on her for a long time. “Processing is when you talk to someone and you believe them and they make you believe that it’s actually real, and that’s why I fell for it,” McGee said.

McGee wrote a check for $100 directly from school funds, which she had no authority to do. It was in the name of Luis Alberto Feranendez, the man McGee considered Musk's "right hand".

McGee apologized for what she did during the meeting. “I put myself in a terrible position. I made a bad decision,” she said. Three other administrators said she created a toxic work environment and refused to continue working with her. She then resigned and walked out of the meeting with her husband, who was a teacher but also retired.
