In Florida, a boy drowned in a pond while relatives swam nearby

An 9-year-old boy from Florida drowned in a pond after he fell into it while walking with his mother, uncle, and three other children.

Hillsborough County Sheriff, Chad Chronister, said the child first sat on the seafront at Bullfrog Creek in Gibsonton, south of Tampa, when adults decided to cross the pond, leaving the boy on the other side.

“A nine-year-old child was standing on the embankment and then decided to go into the water. His mom screamed at him and told him to stay put,” the sheriff said.

The child did not listen to the mother and fell in the part of the reservoir where the depth reaches 10-12 feet (3-3.6 meters).

"The first thing I saw was his mother crying on the shore, screaming, 'He's in the water, he's in the water!'" witness Adrian Buehler said.

“I ran home to get something to float on, then jumped into the water and started looking for him,” he added.

The boy was taken out of the water about 30 minutes after he fell there. Paramedics hospitalized him in the hospital, where they ascertained death.

Robin Morales-Perez, the manager of the local park, said she advises locals to stay away from the pond.

The county sheriff added, “I don’t want to seem insensitive, but if your child doesn’t know how to swim, you, as a parent, must protect him and not be allowed to approach the water, where he may be in danger.”
