Strangers 35-year-old William Hale and 43-year-old Frank Ellison shot at each other's cars with a semi-automatic pistol during a high-speed chase. They were arrested when they got out and started fighting on the highway.

During the shootout, Hale's 5-year-old daughter was shot in the leg and Allison's 14-year-old daughter was shot in the back, causing her lung to collapse, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leaper said.

“What could be scarier than one crazy driver with a gun? Two crazy drivers with a gun,” the sheriff said. “Fortunately, no one died in this incident, but it could very easily have ended like this because two people acted stupidly and let their tempers get the better of them. There could have been two dead children because of two stupid grown men."

Leeper said the agency "received several 1 calls with reports of people being shot at" on Highway XNUMX near Callahan.

One caller told police that a black Dodge Ram pickup was "participating in a game of cat and mouse" with a gray Nissan Murano, and that another vehicle was also racing at one point.

Georgia's Hale and local resident Allison "exceeded the speed limit and drove erratically," Leaper said. According to him, the men played with the brakes - they overtook each other and braked sharply.

At some point, Hale stopped his Dodge next to the Nissan and started screaming. Allison's wife, Jessica, "gave him the middle finger." In response, a bottle of water flew at her.

“Then the Nissan driver, Allison, grabbed his .45 Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistol, fired at the Dodge truck and drove off,” Leeper said, stating that the driver confessed to firing. “A bullet fired by Mr. Ellison hit the right rear passenger door and injured the right leg of a 5-year-old girl.”

Hale later told officers that he “heard a loud bang but ignored it until the passengers in the back seat started to panic,” Leeper said.

“Then he realized that his daughter had been wounded,” the sheriff said.

After that, Hale, in his words, "accelerated and fired several shots from his 9mm Glock 43 semi-automatic pistol."

Hale later admitted that he "fired everything that was in the magazine - seven or eight rounds."

“At least three bullets hit the Nissan. One went through the back of the car and hit a 14-year-old girl in the back,” he said.

Both men's wives called 911 and agreed to stop to meet the police.

Instead, both men “came out and started arguing and fighting. The officer was forced to break up the fight,” Leeper said.

Both men were arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, the sheriff said. Court records show that they were each released a few hours later on $150 bail.
