Blackout again: in New York more than 45 thousand people were left without electricity in the heat

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized electricity company Con Edison after thousands of people were left without electricity in dangerously hot weather on Sunday, July 21.

“We have lived through this situation again and again, and they must be better prepared,” Cuomo wrote.

About 46 000 customers in New York were left without electricity, starting with 21: 00. All because of the continuing heat and heavy use of air conditioners just a week after the transformer burned out, leaving almost 75 000 people without light. Most pinpoint outages occurred in Brooklyn and Queens.

Con Edison restored electricity supply to about 13 000 people in southeast Brooklyn, according to a statement published in 1: 00 on Monday, July 22, but 40 000 people are still without electricity.

Cuomo called on residents to check the health of their neighbors, especially older people who are at increased risk of heat-related diseases.

Con Edison warned that in the affected areas it reduced the voltage by 8% during repairs, and urges residents to save energy and asks to turn off unnecessary appliances.

Before the onset of abnormal heat, the management of the power company warned of a possible power outage due to the massive use of air conditioners.

The city also ordered office buildings to be installed on Sunday with thermostats not lower than 78 degrees (+ 25,5 Celsius) in order to reduce the load on the electrical network. A day earlier, due to the heat, the celebration of the 1969 Moon Landing of the Year Square and the open-air festival featuring football star Megan Rapino and musician John Legent were canceled.
