'Intervened without hesitation': in the Chicago subway, a passenger neutralized an armed robber

Random witnesses videotaped how a passenger on a Chicago subway took weapons from a man robbing fellow travelers. This happened on Sunday, October 13, in front of the Chicago marathon on the CTA Blue Line.

When the train stopped in Cumberland, Jean Paul Lapierre got out of it and asked another passenger why the participants of the marathon run to the door when they need a completely different direction, reports WGNTV.

"He said, 'There's a guy on the train robbing people.' And it made me angry,” LaPierre says.

The man decided to return to the train to neutralize the dangerous person. What happened next was videotaped by passengers who were still on the train.

Lapierre entered the fray with the burglar and pressed him to the door of the train, pulling the gun out of his hand. The suspect shouted at Lapierre to let him go. But Jean Paul was adamant.

"Do not move! I will not let you go!" - Lapierre repeated repeatedly.

Arriving from Boston, where he manages the warehouse, 54-year-old Lapierre said he was used to resisting strong guys. Boxing lessons in his youth helped fully approach this meeting.

“I'm a boxer. So I’ll break your head with one blow,” we hear him say in the video.

The marathon participant, whom the criminal threatened several minutes earlier, thanked Lapierre for the courage.

“He intervened without any hesitation. It was incredible, because the others just sat there frozen,” the girl noted.

Pulling a gun from the hand of the alleged burglar, Lapierre handed it to another passenger. The man said that the criminal on the train had accomplices. They tried to intimidate Lapierre to let their friend go, but the boxer held out until the police arrived.

“They started threatening me, but I just stood in front of them. And the guy kept repeating: “It’s just a gun, let me go, let me go!” And I kept saying: “You’re not going anywhere,” Lapierre recalls that fight.

“It doesn’t matter,” the suspect says in the video.

“It matters to me,” Lapierre tells him.

According to police, 30-year-old Tremaine Anderson is accused of robbery with firearms. He had a long history of previous arrests, including attempted robbery, beating, and public indecent behavior. The judge refused to charge him a bail.

Lapierre continued his 12th Chicago marathon.

Despite the hassle in the subway, the man admitted that he loves Chicago.

“This is one of the best cities I have ever visited. And incidents, alas, happen everywhere,” Lapierre said finally.
