Authorities want low-income families to pay more for rent

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposes to increase the cost of rent for low-income families who live in subsidized public housing, writes Money.

HUD proposes to raise the rental price from 30% to 35% of the income of the tenant. This increase will increase the monthly rent from 50 to 150 dollars. Approximately 712 of thousands of people living in public housing pay less than 150 dollars per month.

This change will primarily affect people of working age - about half of the 4,7 million people who receive federal housing assistance. The exceptions are pensioners and people with disabilities. Their rent will rise to 50 dollars over six years.

HUD spokesman Ben Carson believes that the proposed changes will help reduce the cost of housing assistance provided and will motivate people to look for better paying jobs.

The proposed changes should be considered and approved by the Congress.
