Sacramento authorities will help pay rent - everyone, regardless of immigration status

Residents of Sacramento, California, who are still struggling financially, can now apply for a second round of assistance from the Sacramento Emergency Rental Assistance Program. Read more in the video MSN.

The Sacramento Emergency Rental Assistance Program (sera2) provides emergency rent and utility services to tenants living anywhere in Sacramento County who have experienced reduced family income or other financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to program website.

Eligible applicants will receive assistance for past rent and utilities due from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021, and may be eligible for a portion of their rent for April, May and June 2021. The total amount of assistance available will depend on the needs of the family.

“From March 2020 to March 2021, people applied. Now you can get help for April, May, June of this year,” says Antonio Budino, a representative of the Family Counseling Center.

Eligibility criteria are based on income that cannot exceed a certain level. Priority is given to people who owe their rent.

“I owe more than $5 thousand. And now everything is so expensive,” said Sandra Queen, who applied for the program.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Have at least one family member who is receiving unemployment benefits.
• Survive financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic
• Experiencing housing difficulties

Help is available to everyone, regardless of the applicant's immigration status. In addition, people will be assisted with the application if necessary.

“People often don't seek help because of their immigration status. So even if they are in the country illegally, they can still apply for the program,” says Boudinot.

To submit an application, you must:

• Photo ID
• Utility bill
• Document confirming income (for the last 2 months)
• A valid email address

There is no deadline for filing an application yet. But the sooner you apply, the faster you get help.
