California authorities banned Uber unmanned taxi

Uber has launched a drone taxi illegally. This is stated in a statement from the California State Department. The agency sent a letter to the Uber office, in which it demanded to stop unmanned transportation in San Francisco until all necessary documents were received.

It clarifies SF Gate, Uber must obtain permission to use car-robots on public roads.

The ban from the California Automobile Office came literally a few hours after the launch of an unmanned taxi in San Francisco. What already wrote ForumDailyOn Wednesday morning, the company announced that it is now in test mode it provides an opportunity to drive in an unmanned taxi. At the same time, there is an engineer on the driver's seat who controls the behavior of the car and is ready to take control at any time.

The company has not yet commented on the decision of the state authorities, but before that it was stated that the technology used by unmanned taxis would not require special permits from the California authorities.

“The rules apply to cars that drive without any control or monitoring from engineers,” says Anthony Levandowski, head of Uber’s Advanced Technology Group. “But this does not concern us yet; we are not yet going to release cars onto the streets right now without any control and monitoring from our developers.”

However, the California Department of Motor Vehicles disagrees with this argument. “This is illegal, Uber must get permission,” said Brian Sublett, a spokesman for the department.

He stressed that such permissions were obtained by 20 companies in California, including Google, in order to conduct testing of unmanned vehicles on the streets. Uber should not be an exception.

Experts believe that Uber has reason to argue with the decision of the California Department of Motor Vehicles. But, according to University of South Carolina law professor Brian Smith, the state always has more leverage in such situations: “They can cancel the registration of a car, the inspector can issue a ticket for dangerous driving, for example,” Smith said.

Anthony Levandowski, head of Uber's Advanced Technology Group, also notes in his blog that such prohibitive measures slow down the development of innovation. “Arizona, Nevada, Florida are ahead, they have confirmed that they are on the side of innovation,” writes an Uber representative, recalling that these states recently legalized the use of autonomous vehicles on the roads.

Experts also suggest that obtaining permits and car insurance will require an additional $ 5 million from Uber.
