California cafe owner charges customers for wearing masks

Visitors are free to express their opinion at a cafe in Northern California, but it costs $ 5 to do so through a mask. The Fiddleheads Cafe in Mendocino has posted a sign announcing payment from customers who wear masks at checkout. In March, the café announced a permanent 50 percent discount for those throwing protective masks in the bin, 34-year-old café owner Chris Castleman said.

“I don’t think $5 for charity is too much for masked customers who claim to care deeply about the community in which they live,” he said in an email.

The proceeds will go to the local anti-domestic violence organization Project Sanctuary within two weeks, Castleman said.

“It’s time for supporters of these ineffective government policies to start paying for the collateral damage they have collectively caused,” the owner said.

According to a couple of signs, the restaurant also planned to charge an additional $ 5 fee from those who "bragged" about their vaccinations.

But Castleman said in a telephone interview, “I don't force anyone to pay. I give them freedom of choice, which seems to be a foreign concept in these parts of the country. "

In June 2020, Castleman temporarily closed cafes northwest of Sacramento after Mendocino County officials warned that masks would be mandatory in restaurants during the pandemic.

“The government shut everything down,” he said. “Everyone who wears a mask is complicit in this.”

He complied with temporary regulations requiring only take-out service, but considers the requirement of masks for waiters and other employees unnecessary.

“I don’t believe in wearing masks,” Castleman said. “Our customer base is very much in line with our beliefs, but I think some people are really unhappy with our cafe.”

“It’s their choice,” he continued. “They can choose which business to support.” They can go to any other business in my county or state.”
