'VKontakte' returned to users the right to delete all information about themselves. How to do it

The social network “VKontakte” for the second time in a day updated the “Rules” section in Russian. On the morning of September 3, the clause according to which users can “delete all information” about themselves along with the page disappeared from the rules.

After the publication Bi-bi-si The social network has returned the rules to the previous edition, which contained this clause. The updated version of the VKontakte rules was up for only a few hours. The changes concerned section No. 5, which is devoted to registration on the site. The following phrase was originally removed from it:

“The User acquires full access to use the functionality of the Site (its data and commands), with the exception of non-activated data and commands, provided that the personal page is filled to more than thirty percent.”

Another phrase was removed from section number 8, dedicated to the responsibility for the use of social networks:

“Deleting the User’s personal page means automatically deleting all information posted on it, as well as all User information entered during registration on the Site.”

None of the changes affected the English version of the rules. At the moment, both phrases have returned to their original place.

The BBC social network itself then reported that the changes were of a technical nature. “No significant changes have occurred for users,” the press service noted. Representatives of the company referred to the rules for the protection of user information, which speak of the possibility of deleting personal data on the page (clause 5.1.5).

Later, the VKontakte press service announced that it was returning the previous version of the rules after publication by the BBC.

Reform after criminal cases

The changes occurred a few days after the launch of the privacy reform on the social network, which allowed completely closing your profile from strangers.

The change in settings was announced after criticism of VKontakte due to the large number of extremism cases initiated based on publications on the social network. There have also been cases reported when the attention of investigators was drawn to posts from pages that had already been deleted.

One of the most resonant was the case of Barnaul resident Maria Motuznaya. Investigators believed that in 2016 she uploaded extremist memes to her VKontakte page. At the same time, by the beginning of the investigation, Motuznaya had already deleted this page.

“In theory, when updating its rules, the platform should notify users about this at least through private messages. Although VKontakte has clause 2.4 stating that changes can occur at any time without notification,” says Sarkis Darbinyan, partner of the Center for Digital Rights, lawyer of the Roskomsvoboda project.

According to him, deleting a page has never reduced the risk of criminal prosecution of a user.

“After the updates on VKontakte, it became much more difficult for various “cyber vigilantes” and “near-structural” comrades to search for dubious content and report it in order to initiate criminal cases. But the social network will still release user information upon request from the authorities,” the expert adds.

How to delete all entries from the wall

Officially delete all posts or comments at once from the wall in "VKontakte" is impossible. Representatives of the social network in a conversation with TJ explained this decision to the fight against hackers - so the attackers will not be able to destroy all the information about the user in a few minutes. Therefore, account holders can delete records only one by one: to do this, open the menu in the upper right corner of the post, and then click on “Delete Record”.

However, there are applications and scripts that complement the functionality of "VKontakte". One of them is the extension ViKey Zen for the Chrome browser, which allows you to clear the wall of all entries. After logging in to the service, you need to find the “Other” section and select “Delete recordings from the wall”.

How to delete photos

VKontakte has the ability to delete photos by albums. To do this, in the section with pictures, you must select an album, click on the pencil icon in the upper right corner, and then click on "Delete Album". This works only with albums created by users: there are also sections “Saved photos” and “Photos on my wall” on the social network.

These albums cannot be deleted, but when clicking on the pencil icon, the profile owners are invited to select several or all photos, and then delete them with one click. You can pre-download the photos, but VKontakte does not allow you to select the entire album - it will need to be done using third-party services like an extension Vkopt or Vkpic.

How to delete private messages

Delete all messages at once in "VKontakte" is also impossible - only individual dialogs. Therefore, you will have to clean the LAN with extensions like ViKey Zen: in the "Messages" section you can delete all incoming and sent (including photos), as well as pre-download voice messages. VKOpt allows you to backup individual dialogs in html and txt formats.

How to remove video and audio

As in other cases, you cannot delete all video or audio recordings from VKontakte right away: users are prompted to do it manually. However, there are scripts that allow you to clear the profile.

In the video or audio section, you need to scroll through the list to the end;
Then you need to click on the right mouse button on the page and select "View code" in the browser;
In the console that appears, select the “Console” section and insert scripts there.
