Zika virus found in nearly thousands of New Yorkers

About a thousand New Yorkers, including 325 pregnant women, received a positive test for Zika. It has also been found in at least 13 children, five of them suffer from microcephaly.

Such data made public City Health Department, as of December 2 2016.

In total, since January 2016, in New York, more than 200 children were born from women infected with the virus, the Department of Health monitors them in the first year of life, to detect late manifestations of the virus, if any.

In total, 8 thousand New Yorkers were tested for the presence of the virus, in 962 cases the test showed a positive result, 325 of the infected were pregnant women. In 92 pregnant women, the virus was finally confirmed; the rest are undergoing additional tests, since the test results raised doubts among doctors.

The Department warns that the virus remains active in the body for several months and can be sexually transmitted after a long time after infection. That is why it is important to have sufficient information about your sexual partner. In order to stop the spread of the virus, the Department distributes more than 38 millions of condoms per year to the population. Experts say that this method of contraception can prevent the disease of sexually transmitted diseases, as well as human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and Zika.
