Zika virus in Texas: there is a case of infection from local mosquitoes
The first case of Zika virus infection from a mosquito bite in Texas was recorded in the territory of Rio Grande Valley.
The virus was diagnosed in a woman who did not travel anywhere, where mosquito carriers had previously been recorded, so doctors believe that she was infected with a virus from the bite of a local mosquito, reports ABC News.
“We knew it was only a matter of time before mosquitoes spread the virus into Texas. We still don't want to believe that the virus will spread throughout Texas, but there may be more cases. That's why people should protect themselves from mosquito bites, especially in parts of the state where fall and winter weather remains fairly mild, said Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner John Hellerstedt.
The infected woman is not pregnant, the state is investigating the case and looking for other people who may be infected with Zika virus. The area around the place where the ill woman was living was treated with special chemicals to reduce the population of mosquito carriers of the Zika virus.
In total, 257 cases of infection with the Zika virus were reported in Texas, but they all concerned people who traveled throughout the mosquito vector, and in 2 cases the virus was transmitted during sexual contact.
