The Vatican will rank the Ukrainian Metropolitan as a saint
The Vatican will soon be canonized by the Ukrainian Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, who was one of the spiritual leaders of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC).
Pope Francis 17 July issued a decree on the heroic acts of life of Metropolitan Sheptytsky. This was the beginning of the beatification (reckoning the deceased saints).
Metropolitan Sheptytsky wanted to be canonized as far back as 1950-1960's. But then the Polish Archbishop Stanislav Vyshinsky, who was against it, intervened.
Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky (1865-1944) headed the UGCC from 1901 to 1944. During World War II, he saved 150 Jews. Risking his life, he hid them in his house and in the monastery shelter. Sheptytsky was not afraid to openly speak out against the bloody German policy towards the Jewish people. He also made a great contribution to the preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
