Washington creates a fund to protect immigrants from deportation
Washington, DC, will join several other cities and create a fund to provide legal assistance to residents facing deportation, according to Donald Trump's immigration policy, reports The Washington Post.
Muriel E. County Mayor E. Bowser announced Monday that she plans to provide lawyers and non-profit organizations with grants for 25 thousands of illegal immigrants who may face deportation.
The $ 500 thousand fund will also help illegal county immigrants to apply for asylum and provide legally resident people in the city with green cards to obtain US citizenship.
In a statement, Bowser said that the police were instructed to limit cooperation with federal authorities when it comes to deportation of residents.
“We need to make sure that all county residents can exercise their federal and constitutional rights,” Bowser said. “As immigration law changes and concerns arise, immigrants will have our support and the support of the D.C. legal community.”
Earlier such statements were made by mayors and governors of Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and the state of New York.
Recall that President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly statedthat he would “focus on identifying and deporting the most dangerous criminal illegal immigrants,” creating a task force within Immigration and Customs Enforcement to do so.
