Washington extended sanctions against Russia for another year
US President Barack Obama announced the extension of the year's sanctions against Russia. Appropriate decree published 2 March on the White House website.
It says that the emergency regime introduced in connection with attempts to undermine the democratic processes in Ukraine, to violate its sovereignty and territorial integrity, is preserved.
Among the reasons that led to the imposition of sanctions were Russia's annexation of the Crimea, the use of force in Ukraine and attempts to undermine the democratic processes.
In March, 2014, the European Union and the United States announced the imposition of sanctions in response to the referendum on joining Russia in Crimea, which they consider illegitimate.
Sanctions were, among other things, imposed on companies and individuals.
Earlier, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that sanctions against Russia will be in effect until Moscow fulfills all the clauses of the Minsk agreements on peaceful settlement signed in eastern Ukraine last year.
“Russia has a simple choice: fully implement the Minsk agreements or continue to endure economically crippling sanctions,” Kerry said at the Munich Security Conference. “Sanctions will never end on their own.”
According to Kerry, Russia can prove through its actions that it respects Ukrainian sovereignty, just as it “insists on respect for its own.”
Moscow’s official reaction to the extension of the US sanctions has not yet occurred.
