Washington accuses Russia and Syria in shelling the UN humanitarian convoy

On September 19, a UN humanitarian convoy consisting of an 31 truck came under fire in the Syrian city of Aleppo. The 18 vehicles were destroyed, the 20 people from the people accompanying the convoy died.

The incident occurred immediately after the end of the truce, about which agreed US and Russia and which was not actually respected. The White House is confident that the humanitarian convoy fired on the Russian or Syrian air force, but Moscow strongly rejects such accusations.

The humanitarian aid carried by the UN and Red Crescent convoy was intended for 78 to thousands of Aleppo residents. The trucks contained hygiene products, medicines, food and other necessities.

The shelling occurred when trucks were unloaded at a warehouse in a settlement in the vicinity of Aleppo, which is controlled by the Syrian armed opposition. On the route of the humanitarian column were notified to all parties, leading the fighting, including the United States, Russia and the leadership of Syria.

According to the UN representative Stephen O'Brien, if there is evidence that the attack was deliberately directed against the humanitarian convoy, the raid can be considered a "war crime."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called those who carried out the attack cowards, noting that the UN would have to temporarily stop the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Aleppo-besieged Syrian military areas, where up to 250 thousand people remain without food, water and medicine.

A ceasefire agreement in Syria was reached between the United States and Russia. According to the document, the Syrian army and the armed opposition cease hostilities, while Moscow and Washington take on the fight against the militants of the Islamic State and other terrorist groups.

The truce failed for many reasons. He was in fact not observed by the Syrian military in the area of ​​the "road of death" in Aleppo, along which the besieged city receives food. On Saturday, September 17, as a result of the bombing of the United States, 60 of the Syrian military was killed - American pilots mistakenly attacked their positions, confusing with the IS.

Washington apologized, but this episode put a cross on the truce. As soon as his term expired, the war between the armed opposition and the troops of Syrian President Bashar Assad resumed.

As follows from unofficial statements by high-ranking American officials, the United States is inclined to believe that it was Russian planes that struck the convoy. However, the White House publicly says that the blame for the bombardment of a humanitarian mission may lie on both Moscow and Damascus.

There were no planes of the international coalition, whose operations in Syria are led by America, in the area of ​​fire. It is still not known for certain where the shelling came from - from the ground or from the air.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that the Russian military had been following the movement of the column, but had lost sight of it in the territory controlled by the Syrian rebels, and had nothing to do with the shelling.

On September 21, it became known about another shelling of humanitarian workers - the Syrian service for monitoring human rights violations, based in England, reported that in the vicinity of Aleppo, as a result of an airstrike on Islamist positions, in addition to militants, 4 doctors of the international organization Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations were killed .
