COVID-19 vaccine: how to become a volunteer and take part in trials

You don't need a M.D. or Ph.D. to take part in the global quest for a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. Writes about it USA Today.

Scientific companies and institutions are looking for tens of thousands of people to participate in vaccine trials. The sooner researchers can prove their vaccine is safe, the sooner it will be applied universally, thereby avoiding thousands of diseases and deaths. Consequently, people will be able to return to face-to-face communication, work in offices; they will go to gyms, cinemas, as well as go to performances, dine in restaurants.

Vaccination is the only way to stop this pandemic caused by a highly contagious virus.

Three vaccine candidates have begun Phase III trials in the United States. If all seven federal-funded vaccine candidates make it to Phase 3, they will need a total of at least 210 volunteers.

Registration for the Moderna vaccine trial

As of 28 August, more than 17 people have participated in the Moderna study, with testing centers open throughout the country. Researchers are looking for healthy, high-risk participants over 000 who have never received any vaccines or treatment for COVID-18.

Participants will receive two injections: one on the first day, the second a month later. Then follow-up visits and phone calls for two years. Each participant has a 50% chance of getting the study vaccine and a 50% chance of getting a placebo, but neither will know they got the shot until the trial ends, two years later.

Participants will be asked to keep electronic diaries and report any COVID-19 symptoms during the study.

Pfizer and BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine Research

Specialists are looking for healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 85 who are not pregnant and have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 to participate in this study.

Participants will receive two injections approximately three weeks apart. They will be asked to record and report any changes in health status over time. Everyone will be given an electronic diary or they will download a secure application to their phone.

Volunteers will be asked to make four additional study visits within two years of their last injection. All participants will be reimbursed for the time and costs associated with completing the electronic diary, as well as for parking, meals and travel.

AstraZeneca, Oxford University Research Vaccine

This study is seeking 30 participants. They must be at least 000 years of age, in good or stable health, and at increased risk of contracting COVID-18, but not infected with it (confirmed absence of a diagnosis of COVID-19).

This study has three parts: screening, investigational treatment, and follow-up. After visiting the center for more information during screening, participants will be randomly assigned to receive two injections (either study vaccine or placebo) four weeks apart. The chance of getting the vaccine is twice as likely as a placebo.

Follow-up will occur over a two-year period, with participants visiting the training center up to six times for assessment. They should expect regular phone calls, emails and text messages asking about COVID-19 symptoms.

Other COVID-19 Treatment and Prevention Research

Companies and institutions across the country are studying not only the COVID-19 vaccine, but also treatments and prevention.

Company Velocity Clinical Research has joined the search for potential volunteers willing to participate in ongoing or future clinical trials for the prevention of COVID-19. The only requirement is that participants must be over 18 years old.

UC Health in Cincinnati is recruiting participants for clinical trials aimed at evaluating the safety and effectiveness of vaccines against COVID-19. Interested parties should complete a short survey, after which the coordinator of this program will contact you to see if you are eligible.

In addition to vaccine trials, UC Health is recruiting participants for a wide range of treatment trials. This includes testing the plasma of recovered patients as a treatment and prevention, nebulizer treatment, antiviral drugs, immunosuppressants and even medications for high blood pressure.
