Starting in October, some food stamp recipients in West Virginia will have to meet certain job requirements in order to take advantage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Governor Jim Justus signed a bill on Tuesday.

The bill applies to any “able-bodied" adults between the ages of 18 and 49 who are not pregnant, have no dependents, and are not disabled or military veterans. To get the benefits of SNAP, these recipients will have to either work or participate in staff training at least 20 hours per week.

The bill will allow in certain districts (46 of 55 districts) to retreat from the rules on mandatory employment until October of the 2022 year.

Alabama and Georgia, among other states, have similar job requirements for food stamp recipients.

Proponents of the new bill say that this will prevent some recipients from abusing the system and will help people return to work, even if it is just volunteering.

Opponents, on the other hand, argue that the new bill will deprive poor people of the right to participate in the food stamp program.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the maximum possible assistance is $ 192 per month, or about $ 6,40.
