U.S. citizen arrested by border guards dies in Texas detention center

His name was James Paul Markowitz, he was arrested on February 4 after he was recognized as a suspect in a smuggling case involving illegal immigrants, the US Customs and Border Patrol said in a statement.

Border patrol agents arrested Markowitz at a station in Bracketville, Texas, on Tuesday, February 4, at 15:30. Markowitz began to show signs of ill health during the detention, after which he was given first aid. He was then sent to a local hospital. At 21:37 he died.

The BuzzFeed statement, which first reported on Markowitz’s death, said he had signs of ill health around 18.00 p.m. An ambulance arrived at 18:40

In a statement provided by HuffPost, there was no additional information about Markowitz’s health or death.

A border guard press release also said that Markowitz was arrested after stopping his Dodge Charger on US Highway 277. There were no details on why border patrol agents stopped the car.

It says border guards also arrested a 25-year-old US citizen who was driving a jeep with five passengers in the cabin. He did not comply with the requirements of the patrolmen, after which his car was stopped using a controlled device for deflation of tires near the city of Del Rio, which is not far from the border with Mexico in the United States.

The border patrol arrested all six passengers of the car after they got out of the car and tried to escape.

The press release did not say whether these incidents were related, although Raul L. Ortiz, the chief patrol agent of the Del Rio sector, said that both detainees were involved in smuggling.
