In South Korea, a crime movie fan brutally murdered a woman out of curiosity.

In South Korea, a court sentenced 23-year-old Jung Yu-chon, a fan of documentary detective stories, to life imprisonment. She committed the murder, in her own words, “out of pure curiosity.” The publication told in more detail with the BBC.

It all happened in Busan in the southeast of the country. According to the investigation, the accused was obsessed with the idea of ​​committing murder.

In May of this year, she met a young teacher through an application for finding English tutors, arranged lessons at her home and stabbed her to death.

Such cruelty shocked the country, and prosecutors demanded the death penalty for the accused. Although South Korea has not formally abolished the death penalty, it has not been used since 1997.

Search for a victim

Chung Yu-chon, unemployed and living with her grandfather, led a reclusive life.

The prosecution revealed to the court that she spent months searching for a potential victim. Over 50 requests were sent to tutors, mostly women, asking about the possibility of classes in their homes.

In May, posing as the mother of a high school graduate in need of English lessons, Jung Yoo-chung contacted the 26-year-old woman and found out her address. A few days later, she showed up to the teacher, dressed in a school uniform ordered online, and attacked her as soon as she closed the door.

The killer stabbed his victim more than 100 times - most of them after she was already dead. The name of the deceased was deliberately hidden by the police.

After this, Chung Yu-chon dismembered the body and took the suitcase by taxi to a remote forested area in the north of the city. She was detained after a taxi driver reported bleeding luggage to the police.

The investigation showed that for several months the criminal searched the Internet for information about methods of murder and disposal of the body. However, the police noted that Jung Yoo-chun did not take any precautions to avoid being caught on surveillance cameras when visiting the victim's home.

High degree of sanity

When announcing the verdict, the Busan District Judge noted that the defendant's actions "instilled fear in society, creating the impression that one could become a random victim of crime at any time" and created mistrust among people.

During the investigation, Chung Yu-chun repeatedly changed her testimony, but in June she admitted to committing the crime, claiming that at that moment she was suffering from hallucinations and other mental disorders. However, the court rejected her arguments, citing careful planning of the crime.

In addition, the results of the examination confirmed the high level of mental health of the accused.

During the trial she admitted that her interest in murder had been heightened by exposure to crime shows and television programmes.
