In Virginia, an official brought a rifle to a city council meeting

A Virginia city official has shown support for the Second Amendment to the US Constitution (the right to store and carry arms) by bringing the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to a city council meeting. Writes about it Fox News.

Member of the Board of Portsmouth (Virginia) Nathan Clark made this decision because the council was going to consider the Second Amendment and the city had to support it. This would put Portsmouth in opposition regarding arms control efforts.

As a result, the council voted 4 to 3. The incident occurred on the eve of a meeting being prepared in the state capital regarding the human rights to bear and possess weapons.

But Clark pissed off at least two board members in Portsmouth.

They stated that Clark had to tell them in advance that he was planning to bring a weapon, and one of them asked Clark to apologize for not doing so.

“It was a disgrace,” said Vice Mayor Lisa Lucas-Burke. She was among three council members who voted against declaring the city pro-Second Amendment. The others were Councilor Shannon Glover and Mayor John Rowe. The report says Glover complained that what Clark did was overwhelming.

Another critic was Fred Guttenberg, the father of one of the victims of the shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida in February 2018. He accused Clark of “open bullying” and urged him to resign.

“Nobody seemed scared. The cops were there and they knew I had a gun,” Clark said. Other council members supported Clark's position.

“I do not believe Clark needs to apologize for exercising his right to bring his gun into open meeting,” wrote Councilman Bill Moody.

Weapon owners Virginia received support from US President Donald Trump. The president said in a message on Twitter that the Second Amendment was “very seriously attacked”.

“This is what happens when you vote Democrat,” Trump wrote, “they will take your guns.”

In mid-January, Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency and said he was temporarily banned from carrying firearms and other weapons on the territory of the Capitol ahead of the rally.

Arms activists have challenged this order.

“The only people anti-gun in Virginia on the 20th are members of the government, and they have guns,” one Twitter user noted. “Just think about it.”

But a judge in the Richmond District Court upheld Northam's decision, denying the lawsuit filed by the Virginia Citizens League, as well as America’s arms owners, demanding judicial lifting of the gun ban from the Democratic Governor.
