"This was not an accidental shooting," police chief Steve Drew said.

According to him, the 30-year-old teacher received a life-threatening gunshot wound, with which she was taken to the hospital. No one else was involved in the incident, the boy was taken into custody.

“We have contacted the prosecutor and other organizations to help this child in the best possible way,” Drew said.

The chief of police said that a gun had been used in the quarrel and it was up to him to find out where it came from.

“We will investigate. There are questions to ask and find out the details. I want to know where this firearm came from, what the situation was," Drew explained. CNN.

Shooting, he said, was carried out in one of the classrooms of the school.

“This was not a situation where a schoolboy or any other person walks through the corridors actively shooting at people,” the police chief said.

The incident, admitted Mayor Phillip Jones, "wounded my heart."

“This is a dark day for Newport News,” he said. “We have to learn from this and we have to come out even stronger.”

Principal George Parker III said the incident took place in the first grade classroom.

“Today, our students received a lesson in gun violence,” Parker stated.

“I’m shocked and disheartened,” he lamented. “We need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe.”

“We need community support, ongoing support, to make sure that guns are not accessible to young people. And today I sound like a broken record because I keep saying we must keep guns out of the hands of young people. It's horrible! - Parker summed up. - This is something that should never happen! "We are all in shock and know we have a lot of work to do as a community to stop things like this from happening."

Finally, he said that metal detectors are used randomly throughout the school district.
