Ukraine proposes to introduce responsibility for denying the Holodomor and the Holocaust

President Petro Poroshenko declares the need to adopt a law introducing responsibility for denying the Holodomor and the Holocaust. As the correspondent reports UNIAN, Poroshenko said this today in Kiev during the mourning events in connection with the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Holodomor.

“Our descendants must always remember that this was not just an artificial famine, but a carefully planned Holodomor. Moreover, it is genocide, on all grounds, as they are defined in the UN Convention of December 9, 1948,” he said.

The President stressed that not recognizing the Holodomor is as immoral as denying the Holocaust.

“I think the time has come for us to adopt a law on liability for non-recognition of these two unprecedentedly terrible tragedies (Holodomor and Holocaust - UNIAN). For what? So that those who will live after us comply with the law of Ukraine recognizing the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people,” he said.

The President recalled that the 14 countries at the level of parliaments also recognized the Holodomor as genocide, and Ukrainian diplomacy continues to bring the truth to the peoples of the whole world. He said that in March of this year, the Portuguese Assembly identified the Holodomor as genocide, and in early November a draft resolution was also submitted to the US Congress after a number of states decided to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

“We thank our American friends and partners and look forward to a productive vote on Capitol Hill,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

As you know, today in Ukraine they commemorate the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933. In the twentieth century, Ukrainians experienced three famines: 1921-1923, 1932-1933 and the famine of 1946-1947. However, the largest was the Holodomor of 1932-1933 - the genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out by the totalitarian communist regime of the USSR.

According to the Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Research, the loss of population in Ukraine due to supermortality during the Holodomor in 1930's was 3,9 million people.
