French journalist killed in Ukraine: he covered events at the front since the beginning of the war

On May 9, Agence France-Presse video journalist Armand Solden died as a result of a rocket attack in eastern Ukraine near Bakhmut, reports “Voice of America".

It is reported that Solden was located near the city of Chasov Yar, which is located near Bakhmut. The AFP team came under fire from Grad missiles when they were with a group of Ukrainian military. The rocket fell not far from where the journalist lay. Other members of the team were not injured.

“The entire agency is shocked by Arman’s death. His death is a terrible reminder of the risks and dangers journalists face every day covering the conflict in Ukraine,” said AFP President Fabrice Fries.

A 32-year-old French citizen originally from Sarajevo, Armand Solden arrived in Ukraine as part of the first group of AFP journalists that was sent there immediately after the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.

Since September last year, Solden has lived in Ukraine and led the AFP group that covered events in the country. He regularly traveled to the front line in the east and south of Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences to the journalist’s relatives: “Agence France-Presse journalist, one of our compatriots Armand Solden, was killed in Ukraine. With courage, from the first hours of the conflict he was at the front to establish the facts. To communicate them to us. We share the pain of his loved ones and all his colleagues.”

According to Reporters Without Borders, Solden is at least the 11th member of the media to die while covering the war in Ukraine.
