Texas to simplify birth certificate for immigrant children
Last year, a group of immigrant parents from Central America and Mexico filed with the federal court of Texas, claiming that the state refused to issue birth certificates for children in the United States and denied access to vital services.
As a result, Texas officials agreed to expand the list of documents that would allow immigrant parents who entered the country illegally to receive birth certificates for children born in the United States. Currently, the claim of parents is suspended until the introduction of a new policy. It may take about nine months.
“This is a victory for absolutely all undocumented US citizens and children born here in Texas. I think they will get all the benefits that they are entitled to,” said lead attorney Jennifer Harbury. “We still have a lot of work to do, but I think we will eventually make improvements.”
The 14 amendment guarantees citizenship to all children born in the United States. However, the Texas authorities in recent years have significantly impeded illegal immigrants.
Hundreds of immigrant parents along the southern border of Texas have been denied the right to receive a birth certificate for the past three years.
In accordance with state policy, registrars could not accept consular identity cards, more commonly known as matriculas, issued to foreign nationals.
In California, immigrant parents usually use matriculas to obtain birth certificates. Earlier, California passed a law that allowed immigrants to get a driver's license and even financial aid for college.
