Tesla had a massive glitch: drivers could not start their cars en masse

Tesla drivers say they were unable to connect to their electric cars after the manufacturer's app crashed. More details about the precedent told the publication with the BBC.

Dozens of owners posted on social media a bug in the mobile app that prevented them from connecting to their machines.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk personally responded on Twitter to one complaint from a South Korean driver: "Checking."

Musk later said the app was returning online.

The Tesla app is used by drivers as a key to unlock and start electric vehicles.

Owners have posted many complaints on the internet about the inability to use their vehicles.

“I'm stuck an hour away from home because I usually use my phone to start my car,” one Tesla owner tweeted.

According to outage tracking site DownDetector, approximately 500 users reported an app bug at approximately 16:40 pm ET on Nov.19. After five hours, just over 60 error messages were received.

“Sorry, we will take steps to ensure this doesn't happen again,” Musk wrote on Twitter.

However, the app isn't the only way to access cars, said Stuart Masson, editor of the website The Car Expert.

“In addition to the app, there will be an additional mechanism that allows you to get in and out of the car. It will be difficult for drivers if they do not take it with them,” he said. — Technology makes things convenient, but relies on the server running 100% of the time. This is the same as leaving the house without a credit card and expecting to pay for things using your smartphone. If we rely on one mechanism all the time, we can become trapped.”

Professor David Bailey of Birmingham Business School has written extensively about the automotive industry. He also drives a Tesla.

“To some extent, Tesla has become a victim of its own success,” he said. “She encourages her clients to use the advanced technology she creates, but sometimes things go wrong. Although, of course, you can use the key to open the car. But the natural instinct of many Tesla drivers who buy one of the most high-tech models on the market is to rely on this technology.”
