An American was killed in a terrorist attack in Kenya: 18 years ago, he survived the 9 / 11 attacks

An American businessman was identified as one of at least 14 people who died as a result of a terrorist attack in a prestigious hotel complex in Nairobi (Kenya).

Jason Spindler, director of business development firm based in Kenya’s capital, died on January 15, writes CBS News.

Spindler's friend Chris Schroeder remembered him in his microblog Twitter as "one of those rare people whom almost any person loved with whom he came in contact in Kenya and around the world."

The family of the murdered American reported in social media posts that he survived the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, where he lived and worked at the time.

The US State Department confirmed that an American citizen was among those killed, but as of Wednesday, he did not officially name the victim.

On January 16, Kenya’s president claimed that law-enforcers killed Islamic extremists, whose attack on the hotel and shopping complex took 14 lives.

"Go back to work without fear."

“All terrorists have been killed,” President Uhuru Kenyatta said as he announced the end of the operation to secure a hotel complex in Nairobi.

In a televised address, Kenyatta did not say how many attackers were involved in the attack. He said that more than 700 people were evacuated during the security operation, and called on Kenyans to “return to work without fear,” stating that the country was once again safe for its citizens and visitors.

A few hours before Kenyatta’s speech at the scene of the incident, shots could be heard while the police were conducting a sweep.

The attack involved at least four armed gunmen who invaded the hotel and shops.

Al-Shabab, a Somalia-based extremist group linked to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack on the DusitD2 hotel complex, which includes bars, restaurants, offices and banks and is located in an affluent area Nairobi Westlands, which is often visited by foreigners. Al-Shabab carried out an attack on the Westgate shopping center in Nairobi in 2013, which killed 67 people.

The authorities sent special forces to the hotel to neutralize the militants. On Wednesday evening local time, the Kenyan Ministry of the Interior reported that all buildings were protected and there was no further threat.

Kenyan television showed footage from the security camera of the hotel complex, which shows at least four heavily armed men in dark clothes.

The attack began with an explosion, which resulted in the destruction of three vehicles near the bank, as well as the suicide bombing in the hotel lobby, which seriously injured several guests.

Kenyan hospitals have asked local residents to donate blood for the victims, although the number of injured remains unclear.
